From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Running is a means for an animal to move on foot. It is defined in sporting terms as a gait in which at some point all feet are off the ground at the same time. This is in contrast to walking, where one foot is always in contact with the ground, the legs are kept mostly straight and the center of gravity rides along fairly smoothly on top of the legs. The term running can refer to any of a variety of speeds ranging from jogging to sprinting. MotionHumans leap from one leg to the other while running. Each leap raises the center of gravity during take-off and lowers it on landing as the knee bends to absorb the shock. At mid arc, both feet are momentarily off the ground. This continual rise and fall of bodyweight expends energy opposing gravity and absorbing shock during take-off and landing. Running uses more energy than walking to travel the same distance. Therefore, running is less efficient than walking in terms of calories expended per unit distance, though it is faster. In 2004, scientists at the University of Utah and Harvard University hypothesized that the ability of humans to sustain long-distance endurance running may have been instrumental in the evolution of the human form. GNU Free Documentation License Running: What is a the best way to start a 4 mile run - fast or slow? Q. I am a US Army NCO and one of the longest running debates is how to start a run - sprint or jog. I run a 13:30 two mile and a 58:00 eight mile - so I am an OK runner. But when training others who average 14:00 to 17:00 two-mile times what is the best way to start a 4 mile run. This is for an information paper so I need more than opinion (although I want to hear those too). Please give as many references as you can. I've had the best luck with an intervalic aproach.Starting slow after a warm up and strtch, then a brief sprint in intervals. The logic behind this lies in the fuels used for both types of activity(aerobic and anaerobic) and the physiological (or biological) processes that take place.During aerobic activity your body mainly uses fat converted to glucose through either ketosis or gluconeogenisis. Anaerobic actvity mainly uses glycogen(stored carbohydrates) for fuel. This will eventually cause a lactic acid build up in the muscles. The slower pace after will help these acid levels disipate and the body buffer these acids to remake fuels like ATP(adenosine triphosphate) and glucose. The Krebs Cycle is involved to some degree here as well. I plan on running winter and spring track. I am kind of afraid to run around my neighborhood because the men look perverted. Start by jogging maybe a mile a day, or if you want to do sprinting, run 100 meters and then rest for a period and do it again. As you get more conditioed you can increase on those two work outs (Longer jogs, farther, and more sprints). Best time of day to run is around dusk or dawn (less heat) You could always get away from your neighborhood to a track or such. Lastly, run on grass when possible, it's better for avoiding injuries. Eat bananas, they will help you to avoid painful cramps and stay hydrated Hope I helped. Answered by mam8 - Fri Aug 15 03:56:29 2008 What is the best way to start a running routine outside?
Q. I love working out but I hate running. I want to be able to run 5-10 miles 3 times a week. I can swim forever, bike forever, walk forever but when it comes to running I always want to quit, mostly because I can't run very far without feeling uncomfortable..help! I want to love running! You have to gage yourself to how your body is feeling and developing to your training. If you have one day a week that you run just a little bit further thatn the other days that will help with improvement. Distance training is a long road of endless mental toughning. You got to tell yourself that it gets easier if you keep doing it, it just takes time and patience.
