How do I introduce a new dog to my old dog?
Q. I have an 7 year old male toy poodle at home and I am planning another toy poodle bu this one is female and just 6 months old. My dog is quite the jealous type and is not used to having strangers in the house. He gets very stressed and agitated among stranger and he acts like he's gonna get a nervous breakdown when he sees other dogs. I am quite worried about my old dog, how can I introduce the new to him that would minimize the stress of change? Should I also expects my old dog to share his bed with new dog, there is enough space and should the new dog have her own water bowl and litter box? This is the first time for me to own a female dog, do female dogs have other needs? and when will she be ready for mating?

A. Don't let anyone tell you to spay and neuter your dogs. It is your choice what you wanna do with them. What you need to do is take the old dog to the place where you are getting the new on from. See how he reacts to her. Watch them play for a while. Once they seem comfortable with each other, you can take them home and see how he reacts to her there. Have things ready for the new one. Don't expect the old dog to share his things with her, at least not right away. Dogs are very territorial so watch as the new puppy tries to get into his things cause he might not like it. If he tries to bite her or anything tug his leash and teach him that his behavior is not acceptable. You have to do that a few times. I have been in this situation before… [cont.]

How do I introduce my new dog to my two cats?
Q. My boyfriend and I got a new dog. When we got home our two cats immidiately puffed up and hissed even while he was in the crate. Now a few hours later the older cat (1.5yrs) doesn't have a problem with the dog, he basicly ignores him so I feel comfortable in their future. BUT my kitten (about 11 to 12 months old) hisses and growls everytime the dog near. She stalks him and watchs his every move. I know this is all normal but I fear my kitten isn't going to get over herself. My boyfriend tried to comfort her and she took a crunk out of his arm. Since she is mine when I held her she didn't have any problems, but then she just started growling at me even though she was purring not but 10second previously. I fear she is going to take… [cont.]

How do I get our new dog to stop eating from the garbage?
Q. We just got a new dog that is one year old and won't stay out of the garbage. He will eat any kind of paper product, especially used tissues. YUCK! I've had a lot of dogs before and never had this problem. I don't want to keep the doors closed all the time and with little kids in the house I can't get rid of the garbage cans. This dog seems to know no boundaries. The water bottle seems to help but by the time he stops running to get squirted, he's already ate the tissue. Would hot pepper sauce hurt him? I considered putting a few drops in the bathroom garbage can just to try it but I don't want to hurt the dog. He's almost the perfect dog except for this one thing. The garbage cans are heavy metal cans with lids on them. He's… [cont.]

A. My one year old dog used to do that in the bathroom, we keep the door open and still do, just make sure you watch them and if you see that they are going for the trash, scold them! They eventually catch on that it is not a good thing to do... also, you could by the covered garbage cans (small or large) to keep them from getting into the garbage! and my dog loves hot sauce, but the bitter apple spray typically works for most dogs! Good luck...

How can I get my new dog to stop pooping on the floor in the middle of the night?
Q. I got a new dog from the shelter to keep my other dog company because his mate of 10+ years died and he was lonely. My new dog is a border collie / blue healer. She is about 1 year old and a ver y sweet, hyper girl. She will not stop pooping on the floor at night. I have tried everything. I put up a gate and she jumped it and still pooped in the middle of the living room floor. I can't take cleaning up any more poop. We walk her and take her out several times before bed and first thing in the morning and she still does it. I yelled and spanked her too and that didn't work. Anybody got any GOOD advice. Thanks!

A. You need to buy a kennel (crate) for at night when your sleeping, that way when you get up in the morning you can take the dog directly outside to do her business. My dog knows that night-night means time to kennel for bed, when she was a puppy she whined about it for the first week, thank god for electric fans in the bedroom, can't hear a thing, it works though, and it helps housebreak the dog.

Asked by Fruit Loops - Mon Mar 17 02:08:20 2008 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You need to sit down and discuss as a family what you want the dog for. Comapnionship, loyality, protection, little dog, big dog??? and so on and so forth. Then I would contact a local vet and tell them what qualities you are looking for. They should be able to tell you what breed will be the best for your family. Also check with your local animal shelter. There are a lot of perfectly good dogs looking for a home and family and you won't have to pay hundreds of dollars for one. Plus you can feel good about saving the pups life. Good Luck!!!

How can i get my dog to be less reactive to new dogs?
Q. My dog Roxy always whines and scratches my legs when she sees a new dog that she cant get to. She has always done this only now it is getting a little old. What can i do to make her more calm when around other dogs?Is it possible? She is socialized she just gets fixated with new dogs during walks. Jerking the leash is a little extreme cant that damage her neck?I think i'll stick with the treats.
Asked by Aaron H - Wed Apr 15 22:34:29 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's possible if you let her socialize with dogs. In that case you can try giving her a treat in those cases to divert her attention from the other dog or even just give a quick jerk on the leash to keep her focus on you and not the other dog.

When is it safe to introduce my resident dog to the new dog that has kennel cough?
Q. We adopted a dog from the Humane Society. He has kennel cough. We've separated him from our resident dog. He is currently on antibiotics. It's been a week and the new dog's cough as improved. Our resident dog is at a friend's house. Since kennel cough is contagious, when is it safe to have our resident return home to avoid getting the virus? Thanks for your assistance in this mattter.

A. Check with your vet. If the new dog is on antibiotics and is getting better and since it has been a week, it is probably okay to introduce them to each other. I would absolutely check with the vet first though. They will be able to tell you.

The chihuahua does not like to play but she likes to lounge around with you and be a lap dog. The other one however, is constantly playing and grieving for attention. My question is, how do I get them to get along? The chihuahua doesn't play at all and the new one that loves to play? I realize that the new dog loves to jump on top of my chihuahua and my chihuahua would snap at her. Please help me out.. I really want… [cont.]

A. Unfortunately, it is a difficult situation. The older dog is just getting old and doesn't have her "puppy" moves anymore. My advice would be to really work on getting the newer pup lots of excercise to maybe put her on the same "energy" level as the older one. It is not a necessity for them to play together, but they do need to get along to create a harmonious environment. I would try getting a couple of toys for the younger pup to play with. Good luck!

How soon to get a new dog after death?
Q. My 7-month old puppy got loose last night and was killed by a car. She was an adorable puggle, and we had a very rough night of mourning. My mom seems to be taking it the hardest, as she was closest to the dog. She told me that she always wondered why people whose dogs died got a new one right away, but now she understands. My question is, my mom's birthday is on Friday. Should I get her a new dog as a present, or is it too soon?

A. We lost a beautiful spirited Springer pup to a car two months ago. It has been hard because you can't just go out and get a puppy that is the same. They all have such different personalities. They take a lot of time in the beginning, too, so make sure that if you go ahead and get another, that someone has the time to spend with them now. Summer is usually a good time for people to have a little more time. It sounds like your mom might like another. It does take the mind off the loss as you clean up yet another chewed up shoe and piddle puddle!

How do I get my new dog (2yrs old) to stop chasing my cats?
Q. We recently adopted a Siberian Husky mix. She is a very good dog, the only problem I'm having is that when ever she sees my cats she wants to chase them.My cats are both inside/outside cats. They always have stayed very close to the house. But now they don't want to come in because of the new dog. I know its natural for dogs to chase cats, but I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I have caught the cats and they are now in a room, with food and cat box. I'm worried they will leave and never come back.

A. You picked a breed of dog with high prey drive. He thinks the cats are prey so he chases them. The fact that your cats run and don't defend themselves makes it even worse. You can't train away high prey drive - it is instinctive. You might consider adopting a different dog.

How long until my dogs get used to new dog food?
Q. I had to change their dog food cold turkey because I had no choice. They were on the old Canidae and now they hate the new version and were vomiting on it. Now they are on taste of the wild, they love the taste, but they have horrible gas and mushy poops. This is already the second week they are on it. They are both parasite free per the vet. And it looks like the diarrhea is just diet related. How long till their stomach gets used to it?

A. It usually takes about a month before you start to notice a dissipation in the food change side effects. I've had to go cold turkey with my dogs before, and it's not a pleasant experience for either party. I would try adding a little rice to their diet to help stop them up. It's easily digestible, and worked well with my two.

A. You are a saint and a goddess for rescuing dogs from the shelters!! <3 <3 <3 I've had dogs all my life, and when they cross that rainbow bridge, they leave holes in my heart. Those holes can never be filled by another dog, and that sadness and emptiness lingers in my life always. However, I've always try to focus on the joy my dogs have brought me, and not the sadness they left me with. That's how I cope with lost, and I try to move on with life, with that feeling in my heart. I have never waited long to take in another dog or puppy though, because it's never about "replacing" the one that's left me, but more so about sharing my life with another. I feel your grief...good luck!

A. You need to allow them more than a month. I have four Chihuahuas, all females. I got two of them at the same age as 8 week old puppies, The second one came two weeks later. I got the third one a year later and it took about 3 months before they all got along well together. When they were 4 years and 3 years old, I brought in an elderly Chi to foster and she will be staying now. She's been with us a year now and the four of them are only recently getting along well. We have allowed them to work out their differences and do not interfere unless there is a threat of them getting physical, not just growling. A. Never leave them alone without supervision. The angry dog is just jelous of the new dog, sees you giving the new dog more attention and does not understand why the switch in your affections. The new dog is competition, that's all. It's unfair to your current dogs to just put them aside and start focusing on a new dog (that's how THEY see it). So, when all dogs are together, focus on the 2 other dogs as much as possible. When you focus on the new dog, do it away from the other 2, where they can't see what you are doing... that way the jelousy will subside. Always feed the other 2 dogs first, always give them a petting first when you enter the room, they must feel that they are the leaders (especially the black one) over the new dog. … [cont.]
