A sidewalk (chiefly North American English), pavement (British English, South African English and Philadelphia dialect), footpath (Australian English, Irish English, Indian English and New Zealand English), platform (chiefly Indian English) or footway (Engineering term) is a path for pedestrians that is situated alongside a road or a paved pathway (such as a concrete footpath through a park). A sidewalk may accommodate moderate changes in grade. However, "walkway" is a more complete term for support of walking, and includes stairs, ramps, paseos (passageways) and related off-street tools that provide for a developed pathway.

Sometimes, a sidewalk is next to its street or road with perhaps only a curb in between. Sometimes, there is an area called a parkway or tree lawn in between the sidewalk and the street. For a photo showing a parkway, see image "Sidewalk in Oak Park, Illinois" in the gallery below.

Why does grass grow freely in parks, and sidewalks but I have to spend $100s each year to keep my lawn?
Q. It annoys me that each year I need to water, fertilize, triple mix, over seed, de-weed, etc. and it costs me $100s of dollars a year to just to HAVE grass! I don't want a freakin golf green! But in parks, sidewalks, and other public places, grass isn't taken care of (just mowed) and it grows freely! No fertilizer nothing! WHY?

A. It's probably the type of grass seed that was used in the parks, etc, as compared to the type of grass your lawn is composed of. Try calling the parks dept in your area and ask them what they use, then overseed your lawn with that. Also, you might look for books by Jerry Baker, who is a Master Gardener. He has a lot of tips for improving lawns, without using chemicals.

Should people be fined for allowing their sprinklers to water the road and sidewalks?
Q. Doesn't it annoy you when people have there sprinklers on and over 50% of what they are watering is cement and concrete?! Shouldn't these people be fined for wasting water!? I think so.

A. I think they should be fined. It really makes me mad to see them water everything but their yard. And even with yards, there should be some restrictions. I hate it when I ride by and water sprinkles into my car. Its very common here to see them water everything and the road too. If they went to a third world country and seen how those people are given a limit of a gallon of water a day to either bath with or drink then they would realize what they have and stop wasting our water resources. BTW...Great Question !!!

Is it illegal to write on neighborhood sidewalks with chalk?
Q. My friends did it the other day is it illegal?

A. Depends on what you write. As long as it is neither libelous, scurrilous or obscene, there's no law about it. (unless it's a local municipal law)
