Walking (also known as ambulation) is one of the main gaits of locomotion among legged animals, and is typically slower than running and other gaits. Walking is defined by an 'inverted pendulum' gait in which the body vaults over the stiff limb or limbs with each step. This applies regardless of the number of limbs - even arthropods with six, eight or more limbs.

In humans and other bipeds, walking is generally distinguished from running in that only one foot at a time leaves contact with the ground and there is a period of double-support. In contrast, running begins when both feet are off the ground with each step. This distinction has the status of a formal requirement in competitive walking events. For quadrupedal species, there are numerous gaits which may be termed walking or running, and distinctions based upon the presence or absence of a suspended phase or the number of feet in contact any any time do not yield mechanically correct classification. The most effective method to distinguish walking from running is based on the percent of the stride in which a foot is in contact with the ground (averaged across all feet); defining a walk as greater than 50% contact corresponds well with identification of 'inverted pendulum' mechanics via force plate measurements.

The average human child achieves independent walking ability around 11 months old. The word walk is descended from the Old English wealcan "to roll".

For humans, walking is the main form of transportation without a vehicle or riding animal. Although walking speeds can vary greatly depending on factors such as height, weight, age, terrain, surface, load, culture, effort, and fitness, the average human walking speed is about 3 mph (4.8 km/h). Specific studies have found pedestrian walking speeds ranging from 4.11 to 4.33 feet per second (2.8 mph ~ 2.95 mph | 4.51 km/h ~ 4.75 km/h) for older individuals to 4.85 to 4.95 fps (3.3 mph ~ 3.38 mph | 5.32 km/h ~ 5.43 km/h) for younger individuals. A pedestrian is a person who is walking on a road, sidewalk or path.

How long did it take your baby to walk alone after they started walking with assistance?
Q. My son is 7 1/2 months old and walks really well if I hold his hands. I am just curious how long, on average, it takes before babies walk on their own, once they start walking with assistance. I wonder if my baby is going to be an early walker.

A. My daughter started doing that at 8 mo. She was walking unassisted by 10 1/2 mo old. The doctors told me once a child starts walking while pushing something or holding hands it takes between 3-6 months for them to be on their own

How much friction is best for walking with proper walking shoes?
Q. Should the high or low coefficient of friction be considered best for walking shoes and why? Does it make difference anyway?Thank you very much for your consideration... Will a very high coefficient of friction of shoes make it harder to walk?
Asked by Unknown - Wed Dec 9 20:08:16 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Basically the higher, the better. Think of it in terms of absolutes. If the coefficient of friction was zero, you would not be able to use friction to walk forward at all on a flat surface; you could only move in any direction by pushing off of other surfaces. Shoes with a very low coefficient of friction would be like walking on cooking oil or melting ice. A high coefficient of friction, on the other hand, would only help you in your quest to move forward.

How can I start a stroller walking group?
Q. I want to start a walking group for new moms.I'm a new mom and think it would be great to have a mommy walking group and there babies.Any ideas on how I can start it?
Asked by Krystal A. and baby D. - Thu Jun 19 21:43:57 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. These are all great ideas. I love meetup.com or bigtent.com (alot like meetup without the fees) or even right here on Yahoo! Groups. I would start with any friends you might have that have babies (or friends of friends) as well as local bullentin boards. Also try the local libraries, many of them have infant storytime where you could most likely meet other mommies looking to get out too.
