Walking (also known as ambulation) is one of the main gaits of locomotion among legged animals, and is typically slower than running and other gaits. Walking is defined by an 'inverted pendulum' gait in which the body vaults over the stiff limb or limbs with each step. This applies regardless of the number of limbs - even arthropods with six, eight or more limbs. In humans and other bipeds, walking is generally distinguished from running in that only one foot at a time leaves contact with the ground and there is a period of double-support. In contrast, running begins when both feet are off the ground with each step. This distinction has the status of a formal requirement in competitive walking events. For quadrupedal species, there are numerous gaits which may be termed walking or running, and distinctions based upon the presence or absence of a suspended phase or the number of feet in contact any any time do not yield mechanically correct classification. The most effective method to distinguish walking from running is based on the percent of the stride in which a foot is in contact with the ground (averaged across all feet); defining a walk as greater than 50% contact corresponds well with identification of 'inverted pendulum' mechanics via force plate measurements. The average human child achieves independent walking ability around 11 months old. The word walk is descended from the Old English wealcan "to roll". For humans, walking is the main form of transportation without a vehicle or riding animal. Although walking speeds can vary greatly depending on factors such as height, weight, age, terrain, surface, load, culture, effort, and fitness, the average human walking speed is about 3 mph (4.8 km/h). Specific studies have found pedestrian walking speeds ranging from 4.11 to 4.33 feet per second (2.8 mph ~ 2.95 mph | 4.51 km/h ~ 4.75 km/h) for older individuals to 4.85 to 4.95 fps (3.3 mph ~ 3.38 mph | 5.32 km/h ~ 5.43 km/h) for younger individuals. A pedestrian is a person who is walking on a road, sidewalk or path. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by kyle d - Sat Nov 1 01:45:26 2008 How much walking can one do for exercise without risking overexertion? Q. I am over 55 and I have been walking five miles every morning at a high school running track. So far I feel good as I have lost over 50 Lbs since starting in January. I am planning to do six miles starting next week. If I do that, will I be overdoing it, and therefore risking getting sick? Asked by rumbaking - Wed Aug 20 09:57:42 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you've been walking 5 miles since January, I believe you've built up your capacity for distance as distance is the most important aspect you've to master when you walk. Build up distance, then only the intensity. So, if you want to increase to 6 miles now, I think your body's ready for it and it won't over-exert you. However, always walk within your target heart rate so you don't over work your heart. Here's a guide on how to achieve target heart rate: Answered by Toning Girl - Thu Aug 21 08:38:45 2008 What is the calorie difference between walking 1 mile on a treadmill and riding 1 mile on an exercise bike?
Q. Looking for some guidance to see how many mph I need to be riding on a bike to get the same calorie burn as walking on a treadmill, just not sure how the two compare. For example is walking at a 5 mph pace the same as riding the exercise bike at 15 mph? Is there a difference? Asked by joeflaherty - Sun Feb 14 11:55:27 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A.
