Walking (also known as ambulation) is one of the main gaits of locomotion among legged animals, and is typically slower than running and other gaits. Walking is defined by an 'inverted pendulum' gait in which the body vaults over the stiff limb or limbs with each step. This applies regardless of the number of limbs - even arthropods with six, eight or more limbs.

In humans and other bipeds, walking is generally distinguished from running in that only one foot at a time leaves contact with the ground and there is a period of double-support. In contrast, running begins when both feet are off the ground with each step. This distinction has the status of a formal requirement in competitive walking events. For quadrupedal species, there are numerous gaits which may be termed walking or running, and distinctions based upon the presence or absence of a suspended phase or the number of feet in contact any any time do not yield mechanically correct classification. The most effective method to distinguish walking from running is based on the percent of the stride in which a foot is in contact with the ground (averaged across all feet); defining a walk as greater than 50% contact corresponds well with identification of 'inverted pendulum' mechanics via force plate measurements.

The average human child achieves independent walking ability around 11 months old. The word walk is descended from the Old English wealcan "to roll".

For humans, walking is the main form of transportation without a vehicle or riding animal. Although walking speeds can vary greatly depending on factors such as height, weight, age, terrain, surface, load, culture, effort, and fitness, the average human walking speed is about 3 mph (4.8 km/h). Specific studies have found pedestrian walking speeds ranging from 4.11 to 4.33 feet per second (2.8 mph ~ 2.95 mph | 4.51 km/h ~ 4.75 km/h) for older individuals to 4.85 to 4.95 fps (3.3 mph ~ 3.38 mph | 5.32 km/h ~ 5.43 km/h) for younger individuals. A pedestrian is a person who is walking on a road, sidewalk or path.

Does walking actually work to induce labor?
Q. What about walking actually causes the labor to progress? Also, how much walking and what kind? Is it like speed (or as fast as you can walk) around a park, or just kind of strolling through Walmart? Or both? But which is best and why?
Asked by Jocelyn Claire's Mama <3 - Mon Aug 25 17:25:49 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes because I was in pre-labor for days they had me not eating all day walking up and down the hospital hallways. I couldn't eat because they were scared I'd go into labor and need a c-section because of my blood pressure, which they weren't letting me eat and I was in pain. I told them that was why my bp was up- they were messing with my system didn't even give me a vitamin but luckily that night I went into labor which I think walking helped a lot!

How much friction is best for walking with proper walking shoes?
Q. Should the high or low coefficient of friction be considered best for walking shoes and why? Does it make difference anyway?Thank you very much for your consideration... Will a very high coefficient of friction of shoes make it harder to walk?
Asked by Unknown - Wed Dec 9 20:08:16 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Basically the higher, the better. Think of it in terms of absolutes. If the coefficient of friction was zero, you would not be able to use friction to walk forward at all on a flat surface; you could only move in any direction by pushing off of other surfaces. Shoes with a very low coefficient of friction would be like walking on cooking oil or melting ice. A high coefficient of friction, on the other hand, would only help you in your quest to move forward.

How do I start a dog walking business?
Q. I'm a 16 year old girl. I really love dogs and I want to earn some money. I want to start a dog walking business but I don't know how. I go to school from Monday to Friday and I only have free time on Saturday. Is that ok or do I also have to dog walk during weekdays? How much should I charge? Should it be 5 bucks an hour or what?

A. If you love dogs and would like to make some extra money, this might be just the way to do it, queenhenide776! It would seem to me that there would be a big demand for weekend dog walking services (just when you're available!) because many dog owners don't have to go to work and may prefer to sleep in or do other things beside walk their dogs. As for how much to charge, I'd suggest you check out other dog walkers in the area to see what they're charging. (The resources below may also help you in setting your rate.) I'd suggest you get some background information to get started. When I did a google search of "how to start a dog walking business, I found a blog at www.startdogwalkingbusine ss.info that had some useful information. In… [cont.]
