Racewalking, or race walking, is a long-distance athletic event. Although it is a foot race, it is different from running in that one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times. Stride length is reduced, so to achieve competitive speeds, racewalkers must attain cadence rates comparable to those achieved by Olympic 400-meter runners—and they must do so for hours at a time since the Olympic events are the 20 kilometer race walk and 50-kilometer (31 mi) race walk. It is distinguished from running by the requirement that at any time at least one foot has contact with the ground (judged by the naked eye) and the supporting leg must be straightened (not bent at the knee) from the moment of the first impact of the foot with the ground until the supporting leg passes below the body. racewalkers are expected to maintain good form and are penalized for bending the knee as it passes under the body or having no foot-to-ground contact. The latter infraction is known as lifting. There are judges on the course to monitor form and three judges submitting "red cards" for violations results in disqualification. I've always thought it was a bit of a silly event, but I think it's a better Olympic sport than BMX. That needs to go. If they want to add sports, then they should add cricket, American football, karate, rugby, etc. Actually, they used to have tug-of-war, and after thinking about it, I think that'd actually be an entertaining event to watch! Q. I am a racewalker. I have been able to wear NB 111's for several years, and now they are being discontiued. I have been told that a racing flat is the next best thing to a bonafide racewalking shoe. I am looking for a minimal support shoe that is lightweight and flexible. I am very close to getting some Asics and can't decide between the Gel-DS Racer and the Gel Dirt Dog Spikeless. Anyway, my real question is, will a racing flat hold up to a marathon distance? Depending o your budget you can buy racing shoes for road races, they are light and built to comfort your foot during the race. I know all this because I ran a half marathon with XC racing flats, bad idea, its not right what so ever. Especially if it is a road race and your not on grass.
