From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Walking (also called ambulation) is one of the main gaits of locomotion among legged animals, and is typically slower than running and other gaits. Walking is defined by an 'inverted pendulum' gait in which the body vaults over the stiff limb or limbs with each step. This applies regardless of the number of limbs - even arthropods with 6, eight or more limbs. In humans and other bipeds, walking is generally distinguished from running in that only one foot at a time leaves contact with the ground and there is a period of double-support. In contrast, running begins when both feet are off the ground with each step. (This distinction has the status of a formal requirement in competitive walking events, resulting in disqualification at the Olympic level.) For quadrupedal species, there are numerous gaits which may be termed walking or running, and distinctions based upon the presence or absence of a suspended phase or the number of feet in contact any any time do not yield mechanically correct classification. The most effective method to distinguish walking from running is based on the percent of the stride in which a foot is in contact with the ground (averaged across all feet); defining a walk as greater than 50% contact corresponds well with identification of 'inverted pendulum' mechanics via force plate measurements. The average human child achieves independent walking ability around 11 months old. The word walk is descended from the Old English wealcan "to roll". For humans, walking is the main form of transportation without a vehicle or riding animal. Although walking speeds can vary greatly depending on factors such as height, weight, age, terrain, surface, load, culture, and fitness, the average human walking speed is about 3 miles per hour. Specific studies have found pedestrian walking speeds ranging from 4.11 to 4.33 feet per second (2.8 mph ~ 2.95 mph | 4.51 km/h ~ 4.75 km/h) for older individuals to 4.85 to 4.95 fps (3.3 mph ~ 3.38 mph | 5.32 km/h ~ 5.43 km/h) for younger individuals. A pedestrian is a person who is walking on a road, sidewalk or path. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How would you describe walking through a VERY bad neighborhood at night? Q. I am writing a sad love novel and this girl gets lost. She is walking through the ghetto at night. She is very innocent. So how do i make the readers feel like they are there? What are things i can write that will describe walking through a very bad neighborhood at night? Asked by i will always love you - Sun Nov 15 15:10:07 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Don't expect people to write things for you. Think of a time when you were terrified. How did you react? Remember to keep your five senses in mind: sound, taste, touch, sight, and smell. Do ever remember feeling uncomfortable, like someone was watching you? Or how about a time when you were intimidated? Just think about scary or creepy things. Try listening to scary and depressing music to get you in that mood. It'll come to you, you just have to give it some time. Answered by Tonks - Sun Nov 15 15:18:39 2009 Will walking a mile and a half everyday make me achieve getting a flat stomach? Q. Hi, I'm 16, 6ft 2, I've been walking miles recently and have lost quite a bit of weight but i'm still a little flabby around the stomach area. If I continue walking this amount everyday (about a mile and a half), will I get a flat stomach?. If not, would swimming be a better alternative as well as the walking? Asked by Surrey Lad - Mon Jan 26 14:40:06 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Swimming is great for a full body workout! Keep up the walking and also do crunches along with it. If you look online you can find different kinds of crunches that target certain areas and you should do a mix of those a couple times a week. Answered by ratsinthehallway - Mon Jan 26 15:37:47 2009 When walking a dog and a skunk is nearby, should you stand still with the dog, or keep walking?
Q. I have a small Bishon Frisce, and we have a lot of skunks in the area, so when I walk her, there always tend to be skunks out. She tends to be a typical dog and wants to go over to them and explore, I don't let her, but I can't say the same for the skunks. I don't know if I should stay still with the dog, or just keep walking along and ignore the skunk. Asked by hello_sunshine_1010 - Mon Sep 24 15:10:28 2007 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments A. The skunk will tell you what it's comfortable with. Skunks are very patient and don't squirt without giving ample warning (unless startled). If the skunk ignores you, keep walking. If the skunk shows you it's hind-end, back away very quickly. Don't run, no sudden movements, just back up NOW! Answered by kja63 - Mon Sep 24 15:13:46 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "walking"
